Erst-Wahl-Helfer*innen Berlin - Young Polling Officers Berlin
European voters will elect a new European Parliament in May 2019 - but as in every election, younger voters will disproportionately be absent. We want to change that. In times of declining trust into democratic processes and rising Euroscepticism we aim to acquaint young voters with the EU and train them to become active citizens.
To that end we will train 100 young voters to become polling officers, i.e. volunteers who manage polling stations. In a first seminar participants will learn about and discuss European politics, EU institutions and the importance of the European Parliament's election. A follow up seminar will train the participants in the practicalities of the election process. The practical experience of contributing to democratic processes is supposed to strengthen the participant's identification with European democracy and to encourage them for further social commitment. We further hope that participants will motivate their peers to vote in the European election.
